Episode 07: Tasting the St. Lawrence Market

A cozy meet-up spot where every ingredient imaginable is at your fingertips!

An abundance of food is the only way to describe the St. Lawrence Market. An abundance of stalls, of shops, of goods and of ingredients. There are rows and rows of fruit stalls, tea shops, chocolate shops, fishermen and butchers. There’s cheese specialists, sushi chefs and even tupperware and kitchenware peddlers, all housed in a large building where recipes come to life.

How to choose where to go? I think it really depends on what you’re looking for. This won’t be my last video on the St. Lawrence market I’m sure, as I barely scratched the surface in this one. Given that it was a cold, bleak winter day my friend Michelle and I opted for heartwarming comfort foods. And boy did we find them!

I definitely enjoyed taking bites of Michelle’s orzo pasta from Buster’s Sea Cove. Personally, I opted for a lobster roll because I heard about them from some friends who’ve been to Halifax. I didn’t think it was anything to write home about, though it was pretty good. At a 20$ price tag though, there are definitely much better options within the market!

For a Winter day warmup, check out Chocosol chocolate traders for one of the best hot chocolates you’ll have had in a long time. Chocosol is a chocolate company which emphasizes fair-trading with their farmers and craftsmanship in their chocolate. Their hot chocolate is literally a blended chocolate bar, melted right before your eyes! Try their jaguar chocolate, a one-of-a-kind white cacao chocolate (not white chocolate, white cacao) that tastes truly incredible. You’ll want some for yourself and all your friends. I also tried 100% dark chocolate at Chocosol, which was the most unique taste I had tried in a while.

Just goes to show you can find just about anything in the St. Lawrence Market.

A few cookies and groceries later, this short visit came to an end. Still, it’s pretty clear why National Geographic named the St. Lawrence Market one of the best open-air markets in the world. What do you think? What would you like to try?
